Bob Born, APRN

I am board certified as a Psychiatric Clinical Nurse Specialist since 1997, having 26 years experience in Kansas.

Following graduate training in Psychiatry at University of Missouri-Columbia (1997), I served in the National Health Service Corp for three years caring for individuals who had limited access to healthcare.

Over the next two and a half decades I was able to work with patients in the following:

Crisis Center – Patients who have experienced trauma or otherwise been handed the worst life has to offer including rape victims, family and friend survivors of someone murdered…

Sedgwick County Adult Detention Facility – Inmates who have made very bad decisions.

Inpatient hospital  –  patients during their very worst moments emotionally.

Outpatient clinic – patients who are trying their best to improve on their emotional distress.

Private Practice - Seven years’ experience in private practice with the emphasis on a combination of holistic and medication treatment believing that medicine alone is not the answer. Twenty eight years of treating patients with medication, improved nutrition, sleep, hydration and therapy.

What About Bob…

Everyone has their challenges… I have ADHD, am color blind, hard of hearing and have insomnia. As a patient, I know the frustration of having a medical provider tell me to play soft music, take a warm bath and drink a cup of warm milk to help me sleep. Clearly, they do not know the angst of tossing and turning in bed every night till 2-3 AM. And there are equally uninformed remarks said to those with ADHD. With those experiences I have learned to be a sensitive, attentive and empathic listener when patients tell me their story or problem. I am able to put myself in the patient’s shoes, corroborate with the patient, and come up with a solution that is workable.

Fun Facts about Bob…

- According to surveys, 33% of high school graduates never read another book beyond high school and 42% of college graduates never read another book after college.

I read 7-10 books a year and all of them are psychiatry or philosophy related.

Two of my favorites are Man’s Search For Meaning by Viktor Frankl and PLATO Not Prozac! by Lou Marinoff.

- I have been a sailboat skipper since 2005 and race my 28 foot boat every Wednesday evening mid spring to early fall. I have sailed the Dalmatian Islands in the Adriatic Sea; The Archipelago in the Aegean Sea east of Athens; as well as the U.S and British Virgin Islands in the Caribbean, Bahamas and Jamaica.

- I helped create the Wichita Swing Dance Society in Wichita KS around 2001. I was part of the dancing entertainment for the U.S Navy Blue Angels and the US Air Force Thunderbirds parachute Air Demonstration Squadron.

Final Facts About Bob…

As a teenager, just after leaving my family home for my Saturday job, my car skidded out of control down a rain soaked highway. Minutes later a state patrolman determined I was dead and called for the county coroner. Fortunately, he was mistaken. It was not immediate but eventually I developed a profound awe of how fragile and unpredictable we humans are and how attentive we can become after years of pain.

Bob’s Specialty…

I specialize in working with male and female professionals and regular moms and dads, who have lived long enough that they understand the pain of depression, negative self-talk, poor self esteem, poor job performance and various forms of anxiety, PTSD and OCD. I offer an integrative treatment approach that includes medication management, therapy, supplements, lifestyle coaching, hydration, nutrition, sleep hygiene and more.

I help working professionals and parents with depression, anxiety, PTSD, insomnia, and ADHD to regain confidence and control in their lives, live without paralyzing fear, and restore balance at home and work.

Also, I treat adults suffering from insomnia and nightmares to help them get to sleep faster, have a higher quality of sleep, and sleep longer.
